“Success is a Journey, Not a Destination” Ben Sweetland

As each year passes, so we celebrate another promising group of students graduating from what has amounted to 3 years of challenging study at BCU and our partnership colleges. The cause for celebration is not just the recognition that they have reached the ‘finishing line’ but more often than not for the confidence and conviction they have discovered to continue forwards into the future.

Never has Education seemed more essential to a lifetimes journey, we are now more able than at anytime before to embark and disembark, to decide our paths and create our own destinations. There are fixed routes but also many ways to explore unknown places, to take chances, to discover.

This year we will see more extraordinary achievements through hard work and endeavour but also from taking big risks and having a deep conviction in reaching personal goals.

As Head of this School I am justifiably proud of the Class of ’09, their efforts, their courageous decisions and their contribution to the richness of BIAD and the City of Birmingham.

A journey can be a solitary experience but working in a School such as Visual Communication it becomes a collective venture and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous effort and valuable contribution made by all my Staff whether they are Academic, Administrative or Technical. I’m sure I speak for all the students when I say Thank you!

There will still be many new challenges ahead, the terrain will continue to change, social and political considerations will keep everything in a state of flux and we all have to adapt to meet new needs and demands. The time spent studying at BIAD on the Visual Communication course will have given you all the best grounding for future success, treasure that knowledge and experiences when you continue on your journey.
